Item Agribusiness Firms’ Resources and Performance: The Mediating Role of Strategic Management Practices(Operations Research Society of Eastern Africa (ORSEA) Journal, 2016) Dominic, Theresia; Theuvsen, LudwigThis study investigated the relationship between firms’ resources, strategic management practices and performance of small agribusiness firms. The objective was to demonstrate the role of strategic management practices in facilitating effective use of firms’ resources to achieve their agribusiness performance. Results from a structural equation model using a sample of 229 agribusiness firms from Tanzania indicated that the investigated resources alone do not directly contribute to a firm’s performance unless there is application of strategic management as a potential mediator. Further investigation based on multi-group analysis showed three groups of firms, which differed in their resourcesperformance relationship. The results imply that managers ought to identify a fit between their resources and strategic actions in order to enhance firms’ performance. The study provides manifold managerial implications for small firms that seek to improve their performance. Despite the large number of studies on work environment, none has specifically addressed an integrated relational model of work environment, perceived organisation support, and job satisfaction among teachers in government secondary schools. Regardless of the number of empirical studies on work environment and teachers’ job satisfaction; in developed and developing countries still faces major challenges including non-commitment, high absenteeism rates and many leaving their teaching profession to other jobs. Therefore, this conceptual paper sought to connect concepts of work environment and teachers’ job satisfaction. Specifically, the paper explains concepts of work environment in connections of workplace facilities, professional development, recognition and the moderating role of perceived organization support on teachers’ job satisfaction. The study was conducted through review of literatures of scholarly articles from Google Scholar. The review revealed that there are still inconclusive on the influences of work environment and teachers’ job satisfaction. Thus, this study contributes to the literature by providing such a conceptual model that can be used to study the influence of work environment and teachers’ job satisfactionItem Conceptual paper on work environment and job satisfaction: The moderating role of perceived organisation support(University of Dar es Salaam Business School, 2019-08-16) Mukandara, Levina; Kessy, Severine; Dominic, TheresiaThe aim of this paper is to propose a conceptual model that explains the influence of work environment on teachers’ job satisfaction and the moderating role of perceived organisation support on their relationship in public secondary schools in Tanzania. However, interpersonal trust and work engagement tend to vary with the employees’ years of work experience. This study seeks evidence on whether there is a significant difference in the level of interpersonal trust and work engagement basing on the years of experience an employee spends with an organization in developing countries like Uganda. To achieve this objective, the study uses two groups of employees; one with less than 6 years of work experience, and the other with more than 6 years of work experience to test whether there is a significant difference in the interpersonal trust and work engagement scores. Data was collected from 410 employees working in health based NGOs in Uganda using a structured questionnaire. Results from a Mann Whitney U test revealed a significant difference in the work engagement scores between the two groups. Conversely, there was no significant difference in the interpersonal trust scores. The results imply that highly engaged employees are the most experienced ones, and cultivating a climate of trust is essential for all employees despite their tenure.Item Gender Differences in Enhancing Students’ Employability Skills(Operations Research Society of Eastern Africa (ORSEA) Journal, 2019) Dominic, Theresia; Fulgence, KatherineMen and women have different ways of capturing pieces of information given to them for learning purposes. This study highlights the potential differences in students’ inclination towards developing employability skills. Descriptive characteristics and associations between gender and level of skills, the level of students’ involvement in extra-curricular activities (ECAs) and their intention to become self-employed were investigated. Stratified random sampling was used to collect data from degree groups. Thereafter, data from 359 university students were collected using a questionnaire. The results indicate that all students display average levels of core skills but male and female students differ significantly in their level of core competencies, with males displaying higher levels of core competencies than females. In addition, the results from the chisquare test indicate a significant association between gender and the level of participation in ECAs. Moreover, as students face two career choices between paid and self-employment, males are more likely to choose self-employment than female students. Further analysis indicates the contribution of degree programme, parents’ background and students’ experience in doing business as factors that affect their employability. Theoretically, the study highlights gender differences in terms of employability skills, engagement in ECAs and intention to become self-employed considering the stated factors. As regards policy and practical relevance, higher learning institutions are recommended to consider gender differences as they develop relevant ECAs in order to enhance students’ employability skills equally regardless of their gender.Item The Influence of Employees’ Communication on The Practices of Occupational Health and Safety in Small Scale Mining Firms in Tanzania(19th International Conference on African Entrepreneurship & Small Business (ICAESB), Conference Proceedings 15-16th August 2019, 2019) Nkolimwa, Dominic; Jani, Devi; Dominic, TheresiaThis article is aimed at analyzing the influence of Employees’ Communication (EC) on the practices of occupational health and safety in small scale mining firms. The paper focuses on the mediating effects of perceived compliance costs. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to analyze data from 297 small scale mining firms and verify all hypotheses on direct and indirect effect of management practices on the implementation of occupational health and safety at the workplace. Using the ERG theory, the results demonstrate that Safety Training (ST) and Employee Communication (EC) have positive influence on the implementation of organization Safety Support (OSS) and Proactive Hazard Control (PHC) at the workplace. In relation to the contingency theory, the findings further revealed that the effects of EC on OSS and PHC were fully mediated by perceived compliance cost (PCC). Also, it partially mediated the effect of ST programs on the implementation of OSS and PHC at the workplace. These results imply that although the implementation of health and safety programs seems to cost the organization, ignoring it will make the organization incur more costs. Therefore, management should avoid too much cost –cutting measures in the process of ensuring safety at the workplace.Item Organizational Justice and Job Satisfaction among Different Employee Groups: The Mediating Role of Trust.(Business Management Review, 2020) Ngeleshi, Jacqueline; Dominic, TheresiaIn an increasingly volatile labor market, organizations need to find ways to improve employees’ trust in order to retain them. This study uses data from 212 employees from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in Tanzania to examine the effect of organizational justice and level of trust on job satisfaction across different groups of employees by gender and tenure. The study proposed that the level of trust would mediate the influence of organizational justice on job satisfaction levels of all employees and within employee sub-groups categorized by gender and tenure. The study then confirms the hypotheses by using structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings highlight the importance of trust in the organization but within groups, the effect is more profound in female than male employees, and more on employees with longer work tenure. Implications of the findings are discussed.Item Relationship marketing and customer loyalty: Evidence from Tanzanian Pharmaceutical Supply Chain(The 1st African Conference on Supply Chain & Operations Management (ACSCOM), 25-26th October 2018, 2018) Ndambala, E; Jani, Dev; Dominic, TheresiaThis study examined the impact of relationship marketing antecedents on customer loyalty by drawing evidence from pharmaceutical companies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Pharmaceutical businesses operates in an intensely price based competitive environment in such a way that transaction only strategies need to be complimented with relationship base strategies. Using a structure questionnaire conveniently distributed among pharmaceuticals wholesalers and retailers in Dar es salaam, 100 dully filled were used for analysis. The data were analysed using multiple regression. Findings from the study indicate that, all four antecedents of RM have significant impact on customer loyalty. Commitment ranged the highest antecedent. This was followed by conflict handling, trust and the last one was communication. In sum, the significant impact of these antecedents on customer loyalty stood at R2=0.323 with F value of 10.145, P value was 0.000 and variation of response was 32.3%. Drawing from the findings and reviewed literature, the present study suggests that in order to improve RM in pharmaceutical companies in Dar es Salaam, the following facets need to be taken into account. First, customers ought to know the current and future path with which service renderers may undertake. Second, service providers ought to make their communication medium up-to-date through transacting with their potential consumers. Third, suppliers have to carry out routine satisfaction inventory so as to receive customers’ responses to address their emotions and assess their potential successes. In this regard, service providers need to understand that RM needs to be carried out holistically by emphasizing all of its antecedents with equivalency to each other. Fourth, the companies ought to put their emphasis on the facets of trust that clients consume in order to rationally decide on the trustworthiness of the services remitted.Item Tourism and Logistics of Tourist Destination: Do TV programs matter? Domestic Tourists’ Point of View.(The 1st African Conference on Supply Chain & Operations Management (ACSCOM), 25-26th October 2018, 2018) Mkwizu, Kezia; Mhache, Emmanuel; Mtae, Harriet; Dominic, TheresiaThis paper examines tourism logistics and promotion by focusing on whether TV programs matter from a domestic tourists’ point of view. Tourism logistics involves providing logistics in the form of delivery of services such as transport to customers by ensuring the movement of tourists from point A to point B. However, there are limited studies that look at age of domestic tourists visiting national parks in relation to promotion via Television (TV) programs. This paper specifically establishes the relationship between age of domestic tourists visiting national parks and knowledge of TV programs. The paper uses both quantitative and qualitative methods. Semi-structured questionnaires were used to obtain quantitative data, and interview guides were deployed to get qualitative data that supplemented the quantitative results. Study area is southern tourist attractions in Southern Tanzania. This study used convenience sampling. Sample size of 400 respondents was subjected to descriptive statistics, Chi-square test. Qualitative face to face interview data from 16 respondents was analysed using content and thematic analyses. Findings showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between age of domestic tourists visiting national parks and knowledge of TV programs. The interview results revealed that in order to improve tourism logistics to national parks for domestic tourism, there is a need for “on the spot transport at entries of national parks” and “availability of tourist information centres” so that domestic tourists have more choices of transports as well as access to information. The domestic tourists’ point of view can assist stakeholders to improve tourism logistics for visits to national parks by ensuring that knowledge of TV programs includes information on location and transport methods to national parks as well as availability of “on the spot transport at entries of national parks” and “tourist information centres” hence contributing to the growth of domestic tourism.Item Unravelling the Relationship between Strategic Human Resource Management Practices and Quality Health Service Delivery Using Canonical Correlation Analysis(The Operations Research Society of Eastern Africa (ORSEA) Journal, 2020) Tandika, Emmanuel; Dominic, TheresiaThis study examined the relationship between strategic human resource management (SHRM) practices and the provision of quality health services in four Tanzanian referral hospitals. It adopted quantitative approach with an explanatory cross-sectional design. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 333 employees who were the units of inquiry as well as units of analysis. The canonical correlation analysis (CCA) results showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between SHRM practices and the provision of quality health services evidenced by the level of significance, magnitude of the canonical correlation coefficients and the effect size. The communality coefficients showed that important variables contributing to this relationship were professional development, performance evaluation and employee compensation, with supervision making moderate contribution to this relationship. The findings imply that appropriate application of SHRM practices enables employees acquire the competencies needed and develop attitudes and behaviour that influence their commitment and willingness to exert considerable efforts to influence the quality dimensions of responsiveness, reliability, tangibility, assurance and empathy directly or indirectly. Therefore, the referral hospitals should fully comprehend SHRM practices as a sine qua non for providing quality health services.
