Abstract
Many functions of the information society, such as
e-banking, e-government, and e-learning, are based on
the idea of password-based protection of privacy, security,
and electronic identity. In order to succeed, esecurity
requires technical, organizational, and institutional
support, as well as user awareness. In this pilot
study, we used thematic interviews and closed-ended
questionnaires to examine students’ attitudes towards
issues of information security in a middle-sized Tanzanian
university. The results suggest lax attitudes towards
security issues, and give impetus to actions and
further research on the topic.
