Item The East African Community (EAC) and its influence on Tanzania’s Manufactured exports intensity and competitiveness(Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2014) Rwehumbiza, Deusdedit AugustineItem Export intensity of clothing manufacturers: The mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation(Inderscience, 2017) Rwehumbiza, Deusdedit AugustineThis article explores the interplay between firms’ specific capabilities and their export intensity. Drawing on the resource-based view, the article offers insights into the mediating role of entrepreneurial orientation in the relationship between manufacturing capability and export intensity from an African perspective. A structural equation model for 45 surveyed export manufacturers is analysed to uncover the phenomenon at hand. The empirical evidence underpins the previous scholarly work which considers firms’ internal capabilities as the dominant explanation of firms’ success in international markets. More specifically, statistical testing results reveal that the effect of manufacturing capability on export intensity is mediated by entrepreneurial orientation. In essence, firms’ operational processes provide entrepreneurially oriented managers with the mental map that enables them to find the most appropriate opportunities in the export markets.Item Fund raising initiatives in children’s welfare projects – Perspectives from local NGOs(Business Management Review, Vol. 20, No. 1, pp. 22 - 37., 2017) Rwehumbiza, Deusdedit Augustine; Donat, Revocatus RogathDespite the existence of numerous sources of funding such as the government, multilateral agencies, corporate sponsorship, family foundations and individual donors, NGOs in Tanzania are still experiencing challenges in obtaining children welfare project funds. This study set out to examine the effectiveness of fundraising initiatives undertaken by local NGOs to improve the welfare of orphans and vulnerable children in Ilala District, Tanzania. A holistic multiple case study design was employed using semi-structured interviews with local NGO leaders. With the assistance of Nvivo software programme, pattern coding was inductively used to bring together coded information into more compact and meaningful groupings. Research findings reveal that local NGOs have taken different initiatives to mobilise financial resources. These initiatives include grant applications, fundraising events, personal solicitation, telephone fundraising, internet fundraising and the use of solicitation letters. However, these efforts have not managed to bring about the desired outcomes for the majority of local NGOs. Hence, this study concludes that local NGOs in Tanzania urgently require improved fundraising capacity so as to sustain their operations.Item Institutional perspectives on entrepreneurship in emerging economies(European International Business Academy, 2016-12) Rwehumbiza, Deusdedit Augustine; Marinov, Marin AlexandrovInstitutional theory has paid little attention to its impact on entrepreneurship. Research on entrepreneurship associated with the impact of institutions is limited to the investigation of the interdependencies of institutional behaviour and entrepreneurial activities. Institutional perspectives on entrepreneurship encompass the impact of Scott´s institutional pillars as a foundation of entrepreneurial progressions, related to opportunity creation, their identification and utilisation, establishment of new firms, their early growth and eventual withdrawal. This paper takes the perspective of the role of weak institutions as the ones found in the emerging economy contexts. There is a scant body of publications based on empirical research concerning entrepreneurial orientation in contexts with weak institutions. Generally, entrepreneurs evaluate the stimuli presented to them by the wider environment. These include environmental characteristics acknowledged as formal and informal institutions. The relative significance of the impacts of the two groups of institutions is reflected upon and then formal institutions are critically evaluated in two specific contexts characterised by weak institutional fields. This study provides theoretical and empirical exploration and explanation concerning the impact of examined factors exercising critical influence on entrepreneurial orientation of exporting manufacturing firms in Tanzania and Kenya.Item International expansion and unobserved heterogeneity in critical success factors: Empirical evidence from Tanzania and Kenya(Emerald, 2017) Rwehumbiza, Deusdedit AugustinePurpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the existence of unobserved heterogeneity in the critical drivers of firms’ international expansion. Testing for unobserved heterogeneity assists researchers to come up with precise interpretations and valid conclusions. Design/methodology/approach – Building on the resource-based view (RBV) and institution-based view, this study applies partial least squares structural equation modelling to empirically examine whether there are significant differences in the success factors among 105 export manufacturers. Findings – Statistical results reveal significant differences for the relationships between: managers’ entrepreneurial capability (MEC) and export intensity (EI); a moderating effect of institutional support on the relationship between MEC and EI; and firms manufacturing capability and EI. The research results also show that the RBV is salient for all firms expanding from emerging economies. These findings provide evidence that unobserved heterogeneity is likely to lead to misinterpretations of results and false conclusions. Originality/value – Despite the abundance of natural factor endowments, export performance of firms from emerging economies remains unimpressive. The unobserved heterogeneity revealed across countries calls for business actors at all levels and in different capacities to work on the synergised investment, production, and trade policies in favour of the overlooked human created endowments, particularly capabilities. Capabilities account for the largest part of unobserved heterogeneity and firms’ superior performance.
