Item THE INFLUENCE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND HRM TRAINING ON SMEs EXPORT PERFORMANCE IN TANZANIA(ICAESB, UDSM, 2018) Philemon, Diana; Luge, Jaffar; Mapunda, RomanusEntrepreneurship training has been cited as one of the most important element for small and medium enterprises operating export business. HRM training is among entrepreneurship training that is provided in Tanzania. Various studies on the influence of HRM training on firm performance have been conducted but none of them focused on export performance. Thus, this paper assesses the influence of HRM training on SMEs export performance in Tanzania. A sample of 60 SMEs owners/ managers based in Dar es Salaam was used in this study. Regression analysis and Analysis of variance were used to analyze data. On the basis of the findings the paper suggests that HRM training has a positive influence on SMEs export performance in Tanzania. It therefore, recommends to stakeholders in SME sector to build capacity of SMEs owners/managers their services by providing HRM training to them as a strategy to gain competitive advantage in order to improve export performance in the country.Item The Influence of Perceived Rnvironmental Turbulence on Market orientation of Service Firms in Tanzania(2017-12) Philemon, DianaThe article examines the influences of perceived environmental turbulence on market orientation of service firms in Tanzania. A conceptual framework linking perceived environmental turbulence and market orientation was developed and tested using a sample of 178 service firms. The sample comprised hotels, travel agents and tour operators and insurance agents. Structural Equation Modelling was used to analyse data. Results indicate that the perceived environmental turbulence components, namely, perceived technological turbulence and perceived market turbulence influence positively the market orientation of service firms whereas the perceived competitive intensity influences negatively the market orientation of service firms in Tanzania. The findings contribute to the theory of antecedents and consequences of market orientation developed by Kohli and Jaworski (1990) by adding a new set of factors that influence market orientation of business firms. On the basis of these findings, the paper recommends to service firms for them to be vigilant with changes taking place in the technological environment. They need also to be heedful of changes in customer needs, preferences, composition and tastes and embrace market orientation as a strategic orientation for navigating in highly turbulent environments. The paper also recommends further study to investigate factors that influence managers’ perception of competitive intensity.Item Interdepartmental dynamics and firms market orientation: An empirical evidence from service firms in Tanzania(2018-12) Philemon, DianaThis paper examines the relationship between interdepartmental dynamics and market orientation of service firms in Tanzania. The study used a sample of 177 hotels, insurance agents, tour operators and travel agents from seven regions in Tanzania. Complex random sampling was used to select 177 firms. It involved purposive sampling to ensure inclusion in the sample of hotels, insurance agents, tour operators and travel agents. Simple random sampling was used to pick final firms that constituted the sample. Analysis of Moment Structures was used to estimate the structural equation model using Maximum Likelihood Method. The study used MARKOR to measure market orientation of service firms in Tanzania while interdepartmental dynamics were measured by a scale developed and tested by Jaworki and Kohli (1993). Findings indicated that interdepartmental dynamics (defined as interdepartmental conflict and interdepartmental connectedness) relate to market orientation of service firms in Tanzania. Specifically, results showed that interdepartmental conflict negatively influences on intelligence dissemination and organizational responsiveness components of market orientation but has no influence on intelligence generation component. Furthermore, findings from the study showed that interdepartmental connectedness influences positively on intelligence dissemination and organizational responsiveness components of market orientation but has no influence on intelligence generation. On the basis of findings, the paper recommends to organizations to manage interdepartmental conflicts at the earliest possible stage and nurture teamwork among departments for them to implement market orientation. Empirical findings from the study contribute to theory of antecedents to market orientation.Item Review of Pre-feasibility Study: Main Report and Financial Model on the Mtwara Common User Quay Facility Project for Oil and Gas Supply Base Project(University of Dar Es Salaam Consultancy Bureau, 2015) Philemon, Diana; Dubi, Alfonse M.; Bwire, Hannibal; Minja, ElinamiThis report contains views on the Pre-feasibility Study Report by AECOM on the proposed Mtwara Common User Quay Facility Project for Oil and Gas Supply Base. The review was undertaken by a multi-disciplinary team of experts ranging from port engineering, transportation planning and engineering to economics and marketing. The concept design is in principle applicable, but for the case of Mtwara, it should be supported by appropriate geotechnical information, met-ocean data and other factors mentioned in the relevant sections of this report. The financial model proposed in the pre-feasibility study is at a very early stage and only provides basic outlook of the economic and financial viability of the project. As noted in the supplementary notes “… [Themodel] has been developed for the purpose of sensitivity testing and to provide and [sic] baseline for adjustments and future assumptions”. The report is clear about the depth of the contents of the model by giving a caveat that “... [The] model should not be relied upon for budget or business case purposes”. It is our view that the caveat be taken seriously and cannot therefore be relied upon. As for Traffic forecast: A thorough review of the Market Assessment Report reveals no forecast model is presented as purported in the main report, instead traffic forecasts are presented. As for the Concession Strategy, the build-own-operate-and-transfer (BOOT) is recommended. Monitoring mechanisms need to be in place to ensure the quality of the assets agreed by the parties is upheld from construction to the end of the concession period. At the same time, proponents of the project should adhere to the National Public Private Partnership (PPP) Policy (2009), the Public Private Partnership (PPP) Act (2010), as well as the PPP Operational Guidelines for Tanzania Mainland (2010) and PPP Regulations (2011). Overall, information contained in the report is very course and hence it is recommended that a proper pre-feasibility study be conducted.Item Reward Systems and Market Orientation of Service Firms in Tanzania(Tanzanian Journal of Population Studies and Development, UDSM, 2018) Philemon, DianaResearch on market orientation has produced empirical evidence of the positive influence of market orientation on various performance measures of business firms. Despite this evidence, firms have been observed to implement market orientation in varied degrees. Literature on factors influencing implementation of market orientation is scanty, which could arguably explain the lethargy in the implementation of this strategic orientation. This article examines the influence of market-based reward system on market orientation of service firms in Tanzania. Using data from 178 service firms in Tanzania, the article concludes that reward systems positively influence market orientation of service firms in Tanzania. It recommends that organizations to use market-based reward systems to evaluate and compensate employees so as to stimulate market orientation culture and improve firm performance.
