Kilimanjaro where 3 years of drought was hitting families hard. We were working with our Tanzanian counterparts on the initial stages of developing a way to ensure that remote communities can have access to information related to government services and entitlements. Although this may seem a stretch for an academic librarian, maintaining access to information is at the core of librarianship.Item The Informal Sector: A Strategy for Survival in Tanzania.(Taylor & Francis, 1992) Nkhoma-Wamunza, Alice G.Item Information Seeking Behaviour of Members of Parliament in Tanzania(2015) Mwinyimbegu, Chausiku M.; Nkhoma-Wamunza, Alice G.This study examines information seeking behaviour, needs, and patterns of members of parliament (MPs) in Tanzania; including information sources they use and problems they encounter when seeking information. Primary data was collected through self-administered questionnaires and interviews. Secondary data was collected through document review and library research. Key findings revealed that MPs need information for preparing parliamentary debates and speeches, and that their key sources of information include government newspapers, official publications, and the internet among others. Findings further revealed that MPs encounter problems when seeking information due to the lack of information search skills and the lack of cooperation from government ministries and departments. In view of the fast changing information and ICT environment, it is recommended that MPs should be trained in computer and information literacy and search skills; and should be exposed to a wide variety of databases and search engines. Since MPs spend most of their time in their constituencies, it is recommended that each constituency should have a small, but up-to-date, reference library/information centre; and each MP should be have a research assistant to hepl them find the information they need. These facilities should be properly maintained and sustained.Item Information Technology Transfer. The paper argues that librarians must be knowledgeable about current and future space requirements to accommodate a wide range of activities and functions including information and communication technologies. In view of financial constraints, librarians must also be knowledgeable about available options on how to create space in order to ensure provision of effective library services to users. For example basic entry requirements into graduate professional library schools have shifted from a mere (high school) diploma to a first degree. These changes are driven by the need to enhance the quality of library education programmes, teaching methodologies, teaching staff and students admitted into these programmes. This paper discusses the challenges facing library education and training at graduate level. The paper argues that in the twenty first century library education will have to respond not only to technological challenges but also to current job-market demands and needs. In view of this what is taught must be relevant and must reflect existing situations and job-market demands. Regular curriculum review, assessment and evaluation are viewed as crucial in improving the quality of library education and therefore must be and integral part of it.Item Re-Thinking Changing Roles of Academic and Research Librarians in Tanzania: Reflections Prospects and Challenges(2003) Nkhoma-Wamunza, Alice G.Academic and research libraries are central hearts of universities and their survival depends on their ability to satisfy the information needs and demands of users from a wide range of disciplines. This paper argues that information and communication technologies have brought about profound and unprecedented changes in the way information is accessed, stored, retrieved and delivered, However, in view of this, the role played by librarians must change from mere custodians to educators, facilitators, synthesisers of user information needs and trainers of trainers. The paper also argues that despite the benefit potentials of new information and communications technologies, libraries will continue to focus on their traditional roles, which are collection preservation and dissemination, but, what will and must change are the techniques used in ensuring effective use of library resources in both print and non print forms. This also requires integrating information technology and library resources to support teaching, learning and research and access to information. This demands that librarians be resourceful, forward looking and plan strategically to ensure effective use of library resources and IT facilities. Finally, it stresses that librarians must play a leading role in setting library policy directions and priorities in their institutions in order to achieve organisational change, improve performance and efficiency and in order to sustain their key objectives, which pertain to selection, organization and preservation of knowledge and ensure its access.
